As a midwife, I stand in solidarity with BIPOC, I assert that Black lives matter, and Black births matter. I acknowledge that the disparities in health outcomes for Black mothers and babies in San Francisco and across the country are unacceptable. Disproportionately high mortality and morbidity rates for Black mothers and babies is a public health crisis.
As an anti-racist provider, I believe making individualized, out-of-hospital care accessible for Black mothers is a crucial step to:
~ Improve clinical outcomes (reduce morbidity and mortality)
~ Improve birthing experiences and reduce emotional trauma
~ Challenge the systemic racism and implicit bias inherent in high volume, institutionalized maternity care settings.
